The Minarets of Herat (Musalla Complex) Herat

The Herat Minarets, or Musalla of Herat, were built in the 15th century by order of Goharshad Begum, the wife of Shah Rukh Timurid. Originally, there were 20 minarets, but only five remain today — each standing about 34 meters tall and decorated with turquoise tiles and Kufic inscriptions.
These elegant minarets symbolize the glory of the Timurid dynasty. The complex, located in northwestern Herat, once included a large mosque and madrasa (Islamic school). Construction began in 1420 CE (820 AH) and was continued or expanded by various dynasties such as the Kartids, Timurids, Uzbeks, and Safavids. Today, it is listed among endangered heritage sites of the world.
