Ikhtiyaruddin Castle (Herat Citadel) Herat
The Ikhtiyaruddin Castle, also known as the Citadel of Herat, is one of the oldest surviving structures in Afghanistan, with a history dating back over 2,500 years, to the time of Alexander the Great.
Built on a strategic hill, the fortress features 18 towers, thick defensive walls, and military quarters. It was rebuilt and used through various empires, including the Achaemenids, Kushans, Ghaznavids, Timurids, and Safavids. During the Timurid period, it served as the military headquarters.
Today, the Herat Citadel has been restored and functions as a military and historical museum, welcoming visitors from around the world.
