Rawza-e-Mubarak (Shrine of Hazrat Ali) Mazar-i-Sharif
The Rawza-e-Mubarak, also known as the Shrine of Hazrat Ali, is the most famous landmark of Mazar-e-Sharif and one of Afghanistan’s holiest pilgrimage sites. According to local tradition, the tomb of Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) lies here—although many Muslims believe it is in Najaf, Iraq.
The shrine was rebuilt in the 15th century by Sultan Husayn Bayqara and remains a masterpiece of Timurid architecture. Its turquoise domes, blue-tiled walls, and majestic minarets give the city a radiant beauty. Each year during Nowruz (Persian New Year), the famous “Jahenda Bala” flag-raising ceremony takes place in its courtyard, drawing thousands of pilgrims and visitors from across Afghanistan and beyond.
