Bala Hissar of Balkh (Inner City) Mazar-i-Sharif
The Bala Hissar of Balkh, also known as the Inner City, is one of Afghanistan’s oldest fortifications, located in the northeastern part of ancient Balkh. Archaeological excavations indicate that its history dates back at least to the Achaemenid period (550–330 BCE).
Constructed from mud bricks and raw clay, this ancient fortress played a critical role in the city’s defense throughout history and remains a symbol of Balkh’s enduring strategic and cultural importance.
