The historic city of Bagram, located in the heart of Parwan Province near Kabul, is one of Afghanistan’s oldest centers of civilization. Throughout various historical periods—including the Achaemenid, Greco-Bactrian, Kushan, and Islamic eras—Bagram played a key role in trade, politics, and culture. Archaeological remains, decorative artifacts, and tools discovered here make Bagram one of the region’s most significant archaeological sites.

Excavations at Bagram have revealed temples with Greek, Indian, and Buddhist architectural styles. These temples contained Buddha statues and other religious artifacts, reflecting the spread of Buddhism in the region. The diversity of these temples also highlights the cultural and religious plurality of Bagram in pre-Islamic times.

During archaeological digs, scholars discovered a collection of ancient texts in Greek, Sanskrit, and other languages. In Shakhnah District, several historical forts and citadels remain. Typically built on strategic elevated sites, these structures served as military and defensive centers in various periods. Surrounding Bagram, numerous tombs of religious, political, and cultural figures have been identified, some dating back to pre-Islamic times. These tombs, featuring Islamic architectural elements and traditional decorations, offer insight into the religious and artistic heritage of Parwan.

Jabal Saraj, another important district in Parwan, contains a collection of forts and historical sites. These forts were historically used as military strongholds and today are recognized as significant historical tourist attractions, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur and strategic importance of the region in past centuries.
