The Bala Hissar, meaning “High Fort,” is a large and ancient fortress located in the southern part of Kabul. Its origins date back several centuries, serving as a military and political stronghold during the Timurid, Mughal, and Anglo-Afghan wars.
The fort features thick defensive walls, watchtowers, and stone-paved inner passages. Although parts of it have been destroyed, Bala Hissar remains one of Kabul’s most iconic historical symbols and a testament to the city’s long and resilient history.
