Nobahar Monastery Mazar-i-Sharif
The Nobahar (Nau Vihara) Temple of ancient Balkh was one of the most important religious centers in early Afghan history. Originally a Zoroastrian fire temple, it was later converted into a Buddhist monastery as Buddhism spread through the region.
The name “Nobahar” derives from the Sanskrit “Nava Vihara,” meaning “New Monastery.” It served as a major center of learning and pilgrimage that attracted monks, scholars, and travelers from across Asia. Today, the Nobahar site stands as a symbol of Afghanistan’s multicultural and spiritual heritage.
