Gohar Shad’s Green Dome Herat
The Green Dome of Gohar Shad Begum stands beside her madrasa (religious school) and was built as a magnificent mausoleum for herself, her husband Shah Rukh Mirza, and their sons. Completed in 836 AH (1432 CE), this elegant monument was designed by the renowned architect Ustad Imaduddin Heravi.
Inside the dome are six tombs, each covered with black marble gravestones. The structure’s turquoise-green dome and delicate tilework make it one of Herat’s most admired historical sites. The Green Dome is located south of the Injil Canal, in an area historically known as the Women’s Garden.
